Backyard Chickens

As grocery prices continue to rise and the family budget is ever more strained many families are starting to think seriously about how to stretch the food dollar. Making a vegetable garden is one way to save. Keeping a few hens for eggs and organic bug control is another, if your zoning permits.

You probably won’t save all that much money by keeping hens, feed prices are increasing as rapidly as everything else. You will gain fresher better tasting eggs and a lot of amusement from your back yard flock.

We have had many different breeds of chickens over the years and would like to share some of our experiences.

The familiar White Leghorn is a light framed white egg layer. They are good foragers, tend to be chatty and can become great pets. They rarely brood and have good feed conversion ratios i.e. less food needed per egg produced. Leghorns are thought to have originated in Italy and are the most numerous breed we have in America today. Standard Weight: hen 4-1/2 pounds

Silver Laced Wyandotte is an American breed developed in NY State in the late 1900’s. Considered a medium sized dual purpose meat and egg breed they lay light brown or tinted eggs. Mine have never become broody and are fairly placid in temperament. Standard Weight: hen 6-1/2 pounds.

The Australorps are probably the best brown egg producing hens we have ever had. Developed in Australia from Black Orpington stock, they are a very pretty medium sized dual purpose meat and egg breed, with a metallic green sheen to the feathers. Calm and friendly, they are easy to deal with, in my experience one in ten will get broody. Standard Weight: hen 6-1/2 pounds
